Antique Tibetan Yak Bone Mala with Counter

This is a antique type 108 bead dark Tibetan yak bone mala for meditation with naga shell. Yak bone represents impermanence and is said to maintain healthy blood circulation. Prayer beads are usually used for meditation, counting mantras, and prostration. Malas are usually worn on the left or right wrist while not in use. The mala counters allow the user to comfortably keep track of rotations during meditation. This mala was handmade in Nepal. Each bead on this mala is 8 mm wide. 

The uses of a mala first and foremost for counting the number of repetitions of mantras and prayers. They are also used for counting the numbers of prostrations performed and in more advanced practices of yoga for counting the inhalation and exhalations of 'vase' breathing. The mala is also used as a theatrical device in Tibetan philosophical monastic debate. Another variant use is in divination and fortune telling known in the Tibetan language as a 'mo'.

According to Jetsun Dragpa Gyaltsen, there are three elements of the mala that have symbolic significance, [1] the string, [2] the beads and [3] the head bead. The string is made from nine threads which represent the Eight Bodhisattvas and Vajradhara. The beads themselves represent the arhats of early Buddhism. The head bead has two parts placed together, a stupa shape and a sphere shape. Together they represent the dharmadhatu.
